Missed the mark

I found the clue phrase, but what's the next step?

Non-progress report:

Based on an element on the page that I hadn't used so far, it looked like I could use part of the clue

to find another word on a previous page.

For the remaining part, all I could identify had only a much more tenuous connection to that unused element - always a bad sign in 404.

Taken together, it seemed to point to the code

being a (physical) aspect of Plato's school.

But every code word I tried was rejected...

How far did you get?

Did you get to the clue that is revealed when you follow the instructions? Tried to enter that?

I didn't get any further than half way through (kind of), and would like to discuss possible ways forward.

I presumed it was a grille cipher. traced the grey boxes and overlaid them on the excerpt from Plato.  Cannot make anything of it so i must be doing something wrong

It actually is, so you haven't found the right spot yet. But that gives you only another clue. You can enter it on the website, so you can see that you've found the right phrase, but it's not the code yet. That's the point where I'm stuck.

Another theory I'm working on:

The scrap says "read over carefully" and has its lower left corner bend upwards. Does this mean that we are looking for someting that we have to add to the "L" and then read backwards?

Why is the eye on the bookmark identical to the eye on the airline ticket?

And is there a clue in "half the way there"?

First and third line of the unused fragment, but which letters?  First and third letters of each word also?  Which would not work since there IS a word with only two letters.

You need the first and third letters of every line of the fragment, where present, thus making a 9-letter word.
