Extra symbols?

How do you deal with the symbols that aren't included in the puzzle on page 8? Or the ones that are longer than viable strings of symbols?

Ex:
Black circle (as seen in top row, second box)
Square-black circle-X-square (top row, first 4 boxes)

I've tried going forwards, backwards, vertically, but I'm not sure how to find, let alone "project" the letters.

I haven't solved this but I have found "the plan". As in 8 hollow circles (O) are the start of the word, while solid circles are the end..

The letters start with a "O" and then move in any straight line to the solid circle.

Yes I can do this, for example the T symbols lead to an X in a circle, which is the letter S. The problem I have is that I dont have anything following on from my E or L so I get SS_N_WW which doesnt look like a word to me

Ok so kind of stuck here

I have found letters B A T L L E L W and there appears to be a code string made up of symbols in the third column starting on row 6 and reading up vertically as white circle, black square, black half ellipse, circle with X and black circle that I cannot match to any letters on page 8.

Please let me know whether I am on the right track - thanks!

This is my final code left unsolved!

I have tried converting the letters 'THE PLAN' into symbols and try following through the symbols on the grid, but it's not yielding any recognizable patterns. Which white circle 'O' should I start from?

You need to follow 'the plan'... with the emphasis on 'follow'.

Try tracing your finger along each coded letter, to point you in the right direction...

And no, there's no 'S'.

First things first, if you look at the spread you might spot that the text is laid out really unusually. Why, from a puzzle point of view, might it have needed to be set out like this?

One possible reason is so that

the letters could be pointed at by something without it being ambiguous...

...and that's exactly what's going on here.

Here's a full solution:

1) Find the letters of 'the plan' in the grid, using the code from earlier. Each is written in a straight line.
2) Follow each straight line until it reaches a letter.

SOLVED

Follow the code and use the ruller.
That will take you outside the screen and with ruller you'll be able to collect the letter
First letter is F
Solution is 7 letter word "when you start something and don't get the ending as you hoped"
